Take a fast lens, perfectly capable of making sharp images, set it wide open on the closest possible focus point and aim it at anything farther away to reveal the boundless territory of the unfocused, and therefore unseen. It helps if the lens can produce beautiful “bokeh” (the aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas in the image).
